For Montes Alpha M, the grapes of the 'Finca de Apalta' are gently harvested by hand in small reading boxes during the cool night hours, immediately taken to the winery and sorted strictly. The individually selected grapes are now carefully mashed and fermented, the young wines married to Montes Alpha M, about eighteen months in new barrels of French oak expanded (100% new wood) and finally only very slightly filtered on the bottles filled.
Sandy, dry, nutrient-poor soils over limestone ground (drip irrigation).
Montes Alpha was the first Chilean premium wine, groundbreaking in its day and still as sensational as the first vintage: concentrated, perfectly elegant and refined, this wine shows very clearly which class Chilean wines can achieve. The grapes ripen in the vineyards of the famous' Finca de Apalta ', Montes' winery in Colchagua (Valle Central), southwest of the capital Santiago de Chile. The mountains and the river Tinguiririca determine the microclimate of these crescent-shaped slopes with an average slope of 45 degrees, in the upper layers also over 49 degrees. In these higher elevations, the grapes ripen for Montes Alpha M. The strong slope and southwest exposure of the vineyards guarantees them the perfect amount of hours of sunshine (measured in all-day numbers), the light breezes of the ocean only eighty kilometers cool the vines and support the slow maturity during the significant temperature fluctuations between day and night help to preserve the fresh acidity of the grapes. The sandy dry soil finally allows the targeted drip irrigation and thus supply the vines and thus promotes the maturity of aromatic concentrated grapes. Montes was founded in 1988 by four partners. Each of them an experienced winemaker and connoisseur of the wine market. What bound her beyond her skill was a firm belief in Chile's potential for premium wines. A segment that was lacking in Chile to date and that was intended to be filled with its own top qualities from now on. The success proved the quartet right. The Montes premium and later also ultra-premium wines became the benchmark for Chilean top quality. Today, Montes prepares wines in Chile, Argentina and California.
